This is embryonic but in the toughest times, as they have been of late, I was compelled to document my feelings about the things I most miss about my home city in lockdown - along with my concerns for the future wellbeing of its spirit and people. One thing led to another, and pretty soon my written feelings started to form a melody. Around that moment, I opened the discussion of what I'd been thinking with a good friend. This confirmed my sense that what I'd been feeling and writing could easily come from every one of us who's being kept from enjoying the simple, remarkable places and people which surround us in this city we all love.
Especially for all my Melbourne/Victorian friends and family who will undoubtedly relate and for all those who may live outside our pandemic ‘bubble’, I hope
this might provide you with a genuine reflection or at the very least, serve as a reminder of the juncture we have found ourselves in.
Thanks to my good buddy Ralph for musing with me on this one.
Take care. Be good. Love. Music.

MY MELBOURNE LOCK LAMENT
Words and music by Tom Williams with editorial and lyrical additions from Ralph Johnstone
Beneath your cold, brave exterior
Lives a charming spirit full of gold
How I miss all your youthful energy
Grown suddenly so tired and old
I miss the constant thrum and thrill
That spring around your city streets
The coffee stops, the trams and shops,
All the spectacles at The ’G.
I miss the endless, aimless wanders
On either side of river or fence
I miss the way everybody seeks
That true tribal experience
But more than anything I feel,
I miss the people and your beating heart
Your buzzing lights, long summer nights, on Woiworrung where we did start.
Oh Melbourne, where do we go from here?
Oh Melbourne, it’s sad to see you locked away from all the dreams you held our way.
I miss your beaches, the art galleries
Your ever-changing diversity
(I) miss your laneways and festivals
Where we could be who we wanted to be
I miss the blissful holiday places
On your doorstep the world is undone
Now all those heaving live music spaces
Standing silent in the midnight sun
Great Ocean Road, the stories told, your ancient wisdom when we play as one.
Oh Melbourne, where do we go from here?
Oh Melbourne, it’s sad to see you locked away from all the dreams you held our way.
I wish you a full recovery
To replenish all that you’ve lost
I worry you’ll be abandoned
By many as they count the cost
But more than anything I feel,
I miss the people and your beating heart.
Designer black. Bouncing back. It’s your character that sets us apart.
Your trees lit up along the Yarra but now no one sees this work of art.
Oh Melbourne, where do we go from here?
Oh Melbourne, it’s sad to see you locked away from all the dreams you held our way
Melbourne, where do we go from here?
Oh Melbourne, it’s sad to see you locked away
So sad to see you locked away.
